Welcome

Welcome at my weblog. I'm Elly Bouman and I graduated in August 2008 as animator at St Joost Academy of Arts and Design, Netherlands. During my study I got fascinated with stopmotion animation with clay and natural materials on multi-plane and cut-out animation. A frequently returning theme in my work is the border of fantasy and reality. People live in all kinds of worlds and I am really curious to these worlds. You will find here a global view of my work since I started at the Art Academy and after. I hope you will enjoy it!

Dobber Festival

I was ask to make something for Dobber a festival organised by Nox Ludi. The festival took place at June 18th en 19th at the Vroesenpark in Rotterdam. The theme was playing and sleeping in the night. In 2-3 weeks time I made a installation of 3x3x3 meters with different mobiles hanging on a wheel. The whole installation was hanging above the water in a party tent so the audience in the boats can float underneath it. To give you some idea I have made pictures of the mobiles separately hanging in my atelier.

dragon, 170x110 cm, toilet rolls, cardboard, paper, acrylic paint, modelling clay, keys, fishing line and bamboo

butterflies, 45x55 cm, butterfly poetry pictures and iron wire

cocoons, cotton and sewing tread

bird, 110x100x80 cm, paper, cardboard, acrylic paint, tape, balloons, wallpaper paste, iron wire, keys, fishing line and bamboo

eggs, 20x17 cm, paper, hair dreads, wallpaper paste, keys, lights and fishing line

boats, 40x110 cm, walnuts, cloth, keys, sate sticks, wood glue, iron wire and fishing line

Reis door de Stad
(Journey through the City)

In 2009 I joint a animation project with the Djembeeband Convoi Exceptional and 10 other animators. The animation takes you at a journey through the city. Each animator made a 30 seconds animation (drawing) about city-life, following each others first or last frame. The animation sequence was started in the middle, because it works much quicker that way. I was the first animator that started with the animation sequence and when I was finished I gave my first and last frame to next animators.

The animators in order of appearance:
Dirk Verschure, Jasper Bos, Gerben Agterberg, Daan Faudet, Daniel Oliveira Prins, Elly Bouman, Eva Winkel, Emma Hazenak, Jesse Boom, Linde Faas, Jasper Kuipers.

The première was March 6th 2010, at the MuseumNight in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. With live preformance of the Djembeeband Convoi Exceptional, the film was projected on the walls of Centrum Beeldende Kunst, Maritiem Museum, Kunsthal, Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (NAI) & Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
For more information check this website: http://www.reisdoordestad.nl

My animation part is about a little girl who want to cross a road. When she push the button, she not only triggered the traffic light, but also what's lurking in the dark-side of the crossover. It's comes to her and tempting her to following it. Lucky for her the lights turn green, just in time.

Showreel 2005-2007

Showreel of animations I have made in the period 2005-2007 at St. Joost Art Academy. I edited it on the song Frosti made by Bjork, really beautyful music. But unfortunately the audio content is owned or licensed by WMG and not allowded to put on youtube. So I just picked something of the youtube soundlibrary and swapped audio.

Wolfje

An cut-out animation made on multiplane (multiple plates of glass) with as background: macaroni and natural materials.

Een gedicht door Geerd de Kockere:
Jij was al groot en ik was nog klein,
toen speelden we wolfje en jij wilde hem zijn,
ik liep, ik liep, ik liep naar de top,
maar jij was daar eerst en at mij toen op.

A poem by Geerd de Kockere:
You where already tall and I was small,
we where playing wolf and you want to be him,
I ran, I ran, I ran to the top,
but you where there first and ate me.

Hopeless II

This animation is made for a theory subject. We got a script of a scene and had to make a moving-storyboard or small film. The script was quite hopeless so I ask Dominique Bongers to make together Hopeless II. It´s a 2d and 3d clay animation that we made within 3 hours, we goal was to made a really hopeless animation. The sound are just our voices and we made it on purpose very difficult to understand. But for now to made it more pleasant to watch, I edited some sound out of it.
